MOISSANITE RAW CRYSTAL SILICON CARBIDE CRYSTALS (D-E-F COLOR)

MOISSANITE RAW CRYSTAL SILICON CARBIDE CRYSTALS (D-E-F COLOR)

PAM XIAMEN offers Moissanite Raw Crystal Silicon Carbide.

High quality colorless raw Moissanite crystals (D-E-F color) from PAM XIAMEN are grown using advanced technologies. Gem grade Moissanite silicon carbide crystals are available in different sizes ranging from tens of grams to kilograms.

What is Moissanite?
In 1893, Moissanite was first discovered by the French chemist Henri Moissan . It is a rare mineral with the chemical formula SiC, called Silicon Carbide. Silicon carbide has been popularly used in industrial applications due to its hardness, optical properties and thermal conductivity. it is gaining its track due to its superior semiconductor properties which play critical roles in advanced laser technology and electrical vehicles industry.

How Moissanite was Discovered?

French Chemist Henri Moissan discovered moissanite when he was examining rock samples from a meteor crater located in Canyon Diablo, Arizona (5 hours driving distance from where the PAM XIAMEN LLC Tucson office is located) back in 1893. At the beginning, he thought it was diamonds due to the extreme similarity in properties. Thanks to modern tools, he finally identified the crystals as silicon carbide in 1904. Therefore, the mineral form of silicon carbide has been named moissanite in honor of Moissan.

Gift from the Heaven ( Out Side of Solar System)!
No other source, besides meteorites, had been discovered until 1958 and 1959 when they were found as inclusion in some diamond mine in Wyoming and Yakutia respectively.  Analysis of silicon carbide grains found in the Murchison meteorite has revealed anomalous isotopic ratios of carbon and silicon, indicating that they are from outside the solar system. 99% of these silicon carbide grains originate around carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch stars. They have been commonly found around these stars based on their infrared spectra. The existence of moissanite in nature was questioned even in 1986 by Charles Milton, an American geologist.  Natural Silicon carbide is very rare, if not more than diamond. Therefore, the efforts to synthesis of this material can be traced back to 1902, two years before its discovery.

When did Moissanite Become the New Fashion?
In 1998, Charles and Colvard filed the first patent to use lab-grown silicon carbide as gemstones which has been just expired in 2015. Moissanite has been regarded as a popular diamond alternative, with superior optical properties to those of diamond. Its hardnes is just slightly less than diamond ( 9.5 vs. 10 Moh hardness). Its affordability and less exploitative mining practices necessary to obtain it make it a popular alternative to diamonds.

Comparison of Moissanite with Other Gemstones
For physical properties you can tell from the following chart

Physical Properties Moissanite Diamond
Refractive Index 2.65 2.42
Fire Dispersion 0.104 0.044
Hardness (Moh’s) 9.5 10
Toughness Excellent Good to Excellent

How to Tell Moissanite from Diamond?
Due in part to the similar thermal conductivity of moissanite and diamond, it is a popular target for scams. But you can tell the difference from the following:
1. Higher electrical conductivity and birefringence of moissanite may alert a buyer to fraud. You can use an Ohm meter to tell the difference.
2. Thermochromism is exhibited in moissanite, such that heating it gradually will cause it to change color starting at around 65 °C (150 °F). This color change can be diagnostic for distinguishing diamond from moissanite,
3. The hardness difference.
4. Use advanced material characterization tools, such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, to tell the differences from their structures.
